Phil Ivey Wins First Live American Poker Championship; Ivey Beats Out 106 Players and Takes Home $500,000 In the First Live Telecast of a Major Poker Tournament
LOS ANGELES--(BUSINESS WIRE)--July 23, 2004--After three days of play, world renown poker player Phil Ivey beat out 106 players, eight of which were ranked among the top twenty poker players, to win Fox Sports Net's top prize of $500,000. Fox Sports Net sponsored the first live telecast of the final round of the American Poker Championship that was held last week (July 12-14)at the Turning Stone Casino and Resort in central New York.

This was the first year of this event and the first of its kind as a live telecast of a poker tournament final. Traditionally, poker tournaments have televised only parts of the event to be are shown later as highlights.

The three day no-limit hold 'em tournament began with a limited field of 108 players that was reduced to 36 by the end of the day and then to six for the final round on the third day. The limited field of the tournament created a highly charged atmosphere that allowed top notch players to go head to head. In fact, Fellow Full Tilt Teammate John Juanda took home $125,000 and third place.

A New Jersey native, Ivey won his first WSOP title at the age of 23, where he beat Phil Helmuth and Amarillo Slim in Pot-Limit Omaha. Continuing his winning streak, Ivey followed up by winning three WSOP titles in one year, 2003. He's also won two Bellagio tournaments, one WPO and two Commerce tournaments, in addition to his three appearances at WPT final tables. Ivey carries over his tournament success into live money games and has regularly beaten the biggest games in the world.
