Boston.com / Sports / Golf / Steady Maruyama keeping field at Bay

Putter helps him to claim 2-shot lead; Woods 9 back
By Jim McCabe, Globe Staff, 3/20/2004

ORLANDO, Fla. -- Certainly, he was in a foreign land, but Shigeki Maruyama -- the pride of Chiba, Japan -- proved early that he was no stranger to the ways of pro golf in America.

That time a few years ago, for instance? At the Colonial, when he was approached by Brad Faxon?

"I asked him where a good sushi place was. He said, `How about a putting lesson?' " said Faxon, laughing. Now, asking Faxon if he has advice about putting is akin to asking Bill Gates if he has any money in the bank, so give Maruyama praise for great sense. Give him good marks for being a good student, too.

"He's always been a little iffy with the putter, but he appears to be putting pretty well now," said Faxon. "I think [the lesson] helped him."

The spoken word often presents a barrier when Maruyama is involved, but fortunately golf is a game of numbers that speak a universal language, and you don't need a translator to know that 6-under-par 66 is pretty good stuff. And two days of 66 adds up to 12-under 132, which is why Maruyama sits atop the Bay Hill Invitational leaderboard, leading by two after yesterday's second round.

"I'm hitting the ball very well all day," said Maruyama, a classic understatement since for the second straight day he posted a round that included seven birdies against a lone bogey. That the bogey came on his closing hole, the par-4 ninth, was hardly upsetting, for Maruyama had assumed a command that wasn't threatened until a trio of players went out in the afternoon to push deeper into red numbers and get into the thick of things.

Darren Clarke (68), Chad Campbell (68), and Stuart Appleby (67) are all at 10-under 134, while one of the game's most promising rookies, Zach Johnson, shot 68--135 to settle into fifth. (Faxon had it to 6 under through eight holes, but bogeyed the par-4 18th, then got a bad break at the first hole when his drive hit a tree and bounced wildly left and out of bounds. He made a triple-bogey 7 before settling down to shoot 73--141, nine back.)

But as much as the nature of golf dictates that the eyes gravitate toward those with the reddest numbers, the landscape is tilted when Tiger Woods is involved. And so while it was a day to pay tribute to Maruyama's continued brilliance, or the afternoon charges by Clarke, Campbell, and Appleby, what ignited the greatest buzz was Woods's woes. At a place he usually dominates, no less.

"Welcome to golf," said Woods, after his bid to become the first player in PGA Tour history to win the same event five straight years took a roundhouse to the jaw. Driving it out of bounds on his second hole, the par-4 11th, Woods made a double, then made two bogeys going out, shot 2-over 74, and fell to 3-under 141, tied for 27th. It was just the second over-par score in his last 21 rounds here and at the halfway point he's staring at a whopping nine-shot deficit.

Though he wasn't ruling out a comeback (he once overcame an 11-shot deficit through 36 holes to beat Ernie Els at the Johnnie Walker Classic), Woods rejected the notion the field would come back to him. "Not with the pin locations [today]," he said. "The greens being as soft as they are, the guys are going to continue to go low."

Those setting the pace said they'll go out today with every intention of doing just that. "The greens are generally very receptive," said Appleby, who earned his fifth PGA Tour win at the Mercedes Championship to start the season.

With Maruyama long since finished and both Clarke and Campbell closing out their rounds, Appleby came along quietly to earn a share of second. He birdied the par-4 15th, eagled the par-5 16th, then shook off a bogey at the par-3 second with three birdies on his final four holes, reason enough for the Aussie to sit back with a smile on his face. "If I play like that for two more days, that will be a really good tournament," he said.

Clarke, who pushed to 11 under only to bogey the 18th with a three-putt from 18 feet ("A little bit of a disappointment," said the personable Irishman, "but so be it"), would agree with that assessment. And so, too, would Campbell, the quiet Texan who nearly made the PGA Championship his first Tour win last August, only to come along two months later to break through at the Tour Championship.

Hitting fairways and greens, Campbell made his only bogey of the tournament at the first hole, then played exquisitely. He went out in 34, then earned a share of second with birdies at both par 5s coming home, the 12th and 16th. Good stuff, but not nearly as rewarding as the pairing he felt blessed to have been given -- with the sport's icon himself, 74-year-old Arnold Palmer.

"It was really special," said Campbell, who knows people will look at Palmer's scores (88-79) and perhaps snicker, but they didn't see what he saw for two days. "He's still got some game."

That can certainly be said about Maruyama, the 34-year-old who started playing full time on the PGA Tour in 2000, not quite two years after a memorable Presidents Cup in which he went 5-0 to help the International Team pound the US entry in Australia. He's won three times over here and he's done it with a let-it-rip mentality off the tee, though Faxon's suspicions are confirmed by Maruyama.

Yes, he hit 15 greens and successfully navigated his way onto 11 of 14 fairways, but the key was "good putting continues since yesterday," he said. There was, as there quite often is, a smile on his face, and why not?

There have been just 50 putts in two rounds, a prime reason there's a two-shot lead under his belt.

And to think, all he had to do was recommend a good sushi place.
