Nissan Open winner Weir climbs to fourth in world rankings

LONDON, Feb 23 (Reuters) - U.S. Masters champion Mike Weir has climbed two places to fourth in the world rankings after retaining the Nissan Open.
The Canadian left-hander, who squandered a seven-stroke lead before edging out Japan's Shigeki Maruyama by a shot at Riviera Country Club on Sunday, leapfrogged Americans Davis Love III and Jim Furyk, who slipped to fifth and sixth.
In the only other changes to the world's top 10, Australia's Stuart Appleby rose from 13th to 10th, with 2001 U.S. PGA champion David Toms dropping one spot to 11th.
Appleby, winner of the PGA Tour's season-opening Mercedes Championships in Hawaii, fired a closing five-under-par 66 on Sunday to finish in third.
Tiger Woods, who tied for seventh at the Nissan Open after shooting a closing eight-birdie 64, remained world number one for a record 237th consecutive week -- and 308th week overall.
The 28-year-old American is 23 weeks short of Greg Norman's record of 331 weeks in top spot since the official rankings were introduced in 1986.
Thongchai Jaidee, who made history at the Malaysian Open on Sunday by becoming the first Thai to win on the European Tour, rocketed 37 places to a career-high 78th.
The former Thai army paratrooper, winner of the Myanmar Open the previous week, aced the 16th hole on his way to a closing 68 and a two-shot victory at Saujana Golf Club in Kuala Lumpur.
