Wie poised for top-10 finishWie poised for top-10 finish

Michelle Wie doesn't have much hope of catching the leader but remains in position to post a top-10 finish in today's final round of the Safeway International.

Wie birdied the 16th and 17th holes Saturday to move to 7-under 209, which left her 9 shots out of the lead and in ninth place at Superstition Mountain Golf and Country Club.

Wie watching

WHAT SHE SHOT: She went 2 more strokes under par with a 70 for a three-day total of 209, 7 under and 9 strokes behind leader Annika Sorenstam.

WHAT SHE SAID: "I'm pretty boring at tournaments, really. I'd like to go shopping, but it's too far. I guess, I'll practice, rest and watch Pirates of the Caribbean."

UPS AND DOWNS: Wie called it the toughest round of the three. The best was a wedge shot that put her within inches of the cup for a birdie on No. 9. The worst was on No. 14, which left Wie with a bogey and some "bad vibes."

OVERHEARD: "I think she's great. It is more fun to play when there are lot of people around to see you play."

- Catriona Matthew, one of Wie's playing partners Saturday.

"I'm ready to go (today)," Wie said. "I'm just going to try to play the same way I have been this week. If I would have made 80 percent of my putts inside 15 feet, I would be 14 or 15 under. All three rounds should have been in the 60s."

The 14-year-old phenom made three birdies Saturday, including one on the ninth hole where she thrilled the gallery with a shot from 115 yards that stopped 5 inches from the hole. Her lone bogey came at No. 14 when she attempted to drive the green on the 310-yard hole but pulled her tee shot left into thick rough.

"I got a little greedy on 14 and it cost me," she said. "Today was the most difficult round of the three. I didn't really hit my drives or my irons very well. But I'm still having fun. It's been great."

Park's place
Grace Park kept hopes alive for a hometown winner by making a birdie on the last hole, which put her at 11 under, but she faces a tough challenge to erase a 5-shot deficit against leader Annika Sorenstam.

Park made a 4-foot birdie putt on the 18th hole, but needed 30 putts for her round.

"I would like to be a couple shots closer, and I should be," Park said. "But I have to work with what I've got and hope to make a few more putts. Today, I rolled the putts so well but hit the edges all day."

The short game
Donna Andrews, who has struggled with back problems and hasn't won since 1998, made a strong move to get into contention, but saw it evaporate quickly. Andrews reached 11 under with a birdie at No. 14 but followed with bogeys at 15 and 17 and a triple bogey at 18. That dropped her 10 back.

• Rachel Teske is tied for 46th at par but might have made the biggest comeback. She opened the tourney with a 9 on the par-4 first hole and shot 78, then came back with a 66, making birdie on her final hole to make the cut.
