NHL Suspends Bertuzzi for Rest of Season, Playoffs (washingtonpost.com)

The NHL issued one of the longest suspensions in league history this morning, barring Vancouver forward Todd Bertuzzi for the remainder of the regular season and playoffs for an incident in a game Monday night.

Bertuzzi delivered a cheap shot to Colorado's Steve Moore late in that game, skating behind him, sucker punching him in the head and then falling on top of Moore. Moore appeared to suffer a concussion from the immediate blow, and was badly bloodied when he hit the ice, with Bertuzzi and other players piled on top of him.

Moore underwent neck surgery Wednesday and is out for the season. Although he is likely to make a full recovery, Moore might not be able to return to hockey. Bertuzzi, one of the league's elite power forwards and a key to Vancouver's Stanley Cup hopes, will not play again this season and will have to petition the league for reinstatement before the 2004-2005 season, one that could be erased by a lockout.

Bertuzzi apologized to Moore Wednesday during an emotional press conference. "Steve, I just want to apologize for what happened out there," Bertuzzi said in a tearful address. "I had no intention of hurting you. I feel awful for what transpired."

The incident happened after several Vancouver players vowed to inflict punishment on Moore following what they perceived to be a questionable hit on Canucks star Markus Naslund in the clubs' previous meeting last month. Vancouver was being blown out Monday when Bertuzzi snapped.

The punishment for Bertuzzi is similar to the suspension handed out by NHL officials to Boston's Marty McSorely in 2000 after he struck Vancouver's Donald Brashear over the head with his stick. British Columbia law enforcement authorities are looking into Bertuzzi's actions; they also investigated the 2000 incident. McSorely was convicted of assault with a weapon and sentenced to 18 months of probation.
