Easy wins to City in their past two games against Country have failed to deter punters from backing the Country side in the match at Gosford tonight. Country are favourites at $1.88 with Davidson Sports Betting, City are at $1.95.

A Bill Hurley's Australian Sportsbook punter has invested $10,000 on Country at $1.85 and SportsTAB's Glenn Munsie said this week that betting with his agency was also strong for Country. "There haven't been any major bets on the game but, as far as weight of money goes, it's two dollars to every one in Country's favour."

For the weekend's NRL matches, Munsie said two games were attracting much interest. "Canberra have been heavily backed to beat Brisbane while, surprisingly, Manly are popular against St George Illawarra," he said. "In the first five minutes of betting on Wednesday we took more than $30,000 on Canberra to win their game."

Big bets on Canberra included $10,000 at $1.80, $8000 at $1.75, $7500 at $1.80, $4000 at $1.75 and $3750 at $1.80.

Punters plunged on Manly with 10.5 points start against the Dragons, with almost $30,000 on them at $1.85. "And there has also been good money for Manly to win the game at $3.60," Munsie noted.

Sportsbook spokesman Col Greer said the Cowboys, after their win against Parramatta, were the best-backed team with his agency. "We accepted a bet of $10,000 on the Cowboys at $1.90 to beat the New Zealand Warriors," he said.

SWANS TO FLY: After two close AFL losses to Melbourne and Essendon, punters are confident the Swans can hit back with a big winning score against Richmond at the SCG on Sunday. Davidson has the $1.90 line set at 33.5 points and money has come for Sydney to cover the mark.

Ladder leaders St Kilda travel to Perth to play Fremantle and a Sportsbook punter thinks the Saints' unbeaten run will end, putting $10,000 on the Dockers at $1.70. The Western Bulldogs, with 25.5 points start, have been specked in the game against Essendon tonight.

TAHS AT LAST: Although they have never beaten Queensland in a Super 12 clash, SportsTAB punters have stuck with NSW for the final round match at Ballymore tomorrow night.

While the Waratahs harmed their Super 12 finals chances by losing to the Highlanders in Sydney last week, the Reds scored an impressive win.

"It's a must-win game for the Waratahs if they are to have any chance of making the Super 12 finals," Munsie said. "And our punters think they can do it, despite history being against them. We have NSW at $1.65 and Queensland at $2.15 and all the money has been for the Waratahs."

Herald chief rugby correspondent Greg Growden, who racked up another winner with his best bet last week, is confident the Chiefs, with 6.5 points start at $1.90, are a good bet against the Brumbies at Waikato tomorrow.

COURT ACTION: The second tennis grand slam of the year, the French Open, is little more than two weeks away and punters are becoming active.

A Sportsbook punter is pinning his or her faith in favourite Guillermo Coria for the claycourt event. "A client had $5000 on Coria at $3.75," said Greer, adding Marat Safin was also popular in early betting.

CUP DOUBLE: A Sportsbook punter has taken a double on soccer's UEFA Cup semi-finals.

The punter has outlaid $2500 on Valencia and Marseilles to defeat Villareal and Newcastle respectively, with the bet standing to win the wagerer $5000.

SERGIO SURGES: Tiger Woods and Vijay Singh share favouritism at $7 to win the Wachovia Championship in North Carolina.

Even so, it is Sergio Garcia who has attracted support.

"We had a punter have $400 each-way on Garcia at $36," Greer reported. "And another client scouted even wider in the market and had $150 each-way on Matt Kuchar at $151."
