Former British Open winner John Daly of the United States has a one stroke lead headed into the final round of the Buick Invitational golf tournament in San Diego, California.
Daly fired a 4-under-par 68 in his third round for a three round total of 13-under-par 203. American Stewart Cink is in second place at 12-under-par, after shooting a 1-under-par, 71 in his third round.

American Dennis Paulson is in third place at 11-under-par 205 after shooting a 5-under-par 67 in the third round. Steve Flesch of the United States is in fourth place at 9-under-par 207. Four golfers are tied for fifth at 8-under-par.

World number one golfer Tiger Woods of the United States is in a tie for 21st after shooting an even par 72 in the third round. Woods is at 5-under-par 211 for three rounds.

The Calgary Sun: J.R.'s season likely shot
Flyers centre Jeremy Roenick underwent surgery in New York to repair a broken jaw yesterday and could miss the rest of the regular season. The Philadelphia all-star was left bloodied on the ice and briefly unconscious after being hit in the face by a shot from Boris Mironov in Thursday night's game against the New York Rangers.

"He will miss significant time," coach Ken Hitchcock said after yesterday's practice. "I don't think anyone knows the exact time. It'll certainly be a lot longer than two to three weeks. We'll see how he feels in the next week or so."

Roenick is Philadelphia's second-leading scorer with 18 goals and 27 assists in 45 games.

"His jaw was broken pretty significantly and his laceration is pretty significant," Hitchcock said.

The Flyers, who are tied with Colorado for most points in the NHL, also lost all-star centre Keith Primeau less than a minute after Roenick was hurt.

Primeau was injured after a collision with the Rangers' Bobby Holik. But Hitchcock said Primeau felt better yesterday and could return for today's home game against the Rangers.

Roenick collapsed in a pool of blood after the puck hit the left side of his face and was motionless for several minutes. Dr. Andrew Feldman, the Rangers' physician, said Roenick was unconscious for three or four minutes.

IT'S A DOAN DEAL: The Phoenix Coyotes have signed captain Shane Doan to a three-year contract extension through the 2006-07 season, the team announced yesterday.

Entering play yesterday, the 27-year-old native of Halkirk, Alta., leads the Coyotes in scoring with 20 goals and 35 assists in 55 games.

"A lot has been said about Shane Doan since we put the 'C' on his jersey at the beginning of this season and all of it very positive," Coyotes GM Michael Barnett said in a release.

Doan is earning $2.8 million US this season.

RAY RETURNS TO SENS: The Ottawa Senators added some more toughness to their lineup yesterday, signing forward Rob Ray for the remainder of the season.

Ray, who hasn't played this season and has been working as a TV commentator in Buffalo, said there is one main reason for his return.

"Winning," he said.

"It's got nothing to do with (anything) other than winning. It's what we're all in the business for, it's what our lives are all about is winning the Cup."

The 35-year-old Ray was acquired by the Senators at last season's trade deadline from the Buffalo Sabres.

He played five games with Ottawa, recording four penalty minutes.

CORSON COMEBACK?: The agent for Shayne Corson says some NHL teams are still interested in the former all-star, who hasn't played since leaving the Toronto Maple Leafs in the first round of the playoffs last year.

"Over the last three months or so, there has been a continued interest from three or four teams but it still came back to whether Shayne really wanted to play or not," Rick Curran said yesterday.

Corson played 18 seasons in the NHL but made a bizarre exit from the game last spring when he decided to quit playing for the Leafs in the middle of their first-round playoff series against Philadelphia.

Curran said Corson, 37, has been working out and skating regularly.

ICE CHIPS: The Ottawa Senators will host the 2005 NHL Entry Draft at the Corel Centre, the NHL announced yesterday ... New York Rangers forward Jaromir Jagr will miss at least one game after straining his groin during Thursday's loss to the Philadelphia Flyers.
